Winton

The home of Waltzing Matilda, dinosaurs and opals, Winton was originally known as Pelican Waterhole and is also recognized as the “home” of Australian bush poetry. Winton is right in the centre of Matilda Country – a diverse region where the vast Mitchell Grass plains are broken by splendidly-coloured gorges and ridges. The vastness of the plains and undulating nature of the landscape will be an amazing sight for visitors. With a wide variety of animal and bird life in the area, there is much to do even around dusk and dawn on minor roads and tracks. It forms one third of the Australia Dinosaur Trail – a self-drive ‘triangle’ which also includes the towns of Richmond and Hughenden.
Routes to Winton are operated in conjunction with Queensland Government.
