Hughenden

Forming one third of Australia’s Dinosaur Trail, a self-drive ‘triangle’ which also includes the towns of Winton and Richmond, Hughenden boasts an impressive fossil collection at the Flinders Discovery Centre as well as two famous Muttaburrasaurus replicas. The streets of Hughenden see windmill blades throughout as well as outback history and art features. The nearby Mount Walker rises out of the flat back soil plains and is a great location for grazing across town and around the district. Further out, the Porcupine Gorge National Park is a spectacular gorge, often referred to as Australia’s “Little Grand Canyon”. A fossicking enthusiast haven, the Eromanga Sea Byway and the Chudleigh Park Gemfields feature prehistoric fossils for the former, and peridot, rare sapphires and black spinel for the latter. For a more relaxing experience, the Basalt Byway is a scenic drive plotted through the picturesque volcanic basalt country side, boasting excellent lookouts and an abundance of flora and fauna.
Routes to Hughenden are operated in conjunction with Queensland Government.
