Karumba

Karumba is located in the Gulf region of Northern Queensland, at the mouth of the Norman River. Visitors can expect to see the rich marine wetlands wind their way inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria coastline, and experience the only town along the southern gulf where you can see the Gulf Savannah meet the sea. The town is a major recreational fishing port with the economy revolving largely around prawn and barramundi fishing. International and Australian visitors travel to Karumba in the winter to experience ‘the best wild caught barramundi in Australia’. During the summer, monsoon rains replenish the waterways and attract a multitude of bird species including pelicans, brolgas and black swans. The rare Morning Glory cloud rolls through Karumba in the early hours of some mornings in September and October. World renowned rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers produced a song about Karumba called ‘Animal Bar’, named after a bar in Karumba. Rex services Karumba only when the road between Karumba and Normanton is cut-off due to flooding in the wet-season.
Routes to Karumba are operated in conjunction with Queensland Government.
