Mornington Island

Gununa is the main township of Mornington Island, the largest of 21 islands in the Wellesley Group located in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. With a population of approximately 1,200, it is located in the south west corner of Mornington Island. Lardil and Kaiadilt are the prevalent Aboriginal clan groups on Mornington Island, with the Kaiadilt arriving more recently (in 1947) from nearby Bentinck Island. The island is fringed by mangrove forests and contains 10 estuaries, all in near pristine condition. The Manowar and Rocky Islands which lie about 40 kilometres to the north west of Mornington Island are classified by Birdlife International as an Important Bird Area as it is a globally important habitat for the conservation of certain bird species. Alcohol Management Plans which restrict the type and quantity of liquor that can be brought into various remote indigenous communities have been implemented by the Queensland Government. Please visit Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs for more information.
Routes to Mornington Island are operated in conjunction with Queensland Government.
