Burketown

Burketown is a small town located on the Albert River at the Gulf of Carpentaria in far north-western Queensland. Although it is considered isolated, Burketown contains all essential facilities and services including a school, police station, public library, post office, small general stores/take aways, caravan park, outpost hospital and a hotel. Also known as the ‘Gulf Savannah’, the surrounding environs of Burketown are flat, grassy plains to the south and immense salt flats and wetlands to the north. The grasslands are home to a great array of wildlife including emus, kangaroos and birdlife. The wetlands are breeding grounds for crocodiles, barramundi, prawns and a vast amount of bird species. Burketown currently holds the title of Barramundi Capital of Australia and holds an annual Barramundi Fishing Competition during Easter.
Routes to Burketown are operated in conjunction with Queensland Government.
