Mount Gambier
Set in a unique and ancient landscape of volcanic craters, lakes, caves and mysterious underground waterways, Mt Gambier is a unique holiday destination. Mt Gambier is the perfect destination for an extended stay to enjoy the natural and cultural beauty of the surrounding region, the caves and sinkholes, coastline, rivers, lakes and wineries. Visit Mt Gambier in November to watch the mysterious Blue Lake go from dark blue to turquoise and then return to dark blue again in March. Situated in an extinct volcanic crater, the Blue Lake exposes the crystal clear water that has filtered underground as it passes slowly beneath the city through the limestone. Also visit the magnificent sunken gardens of Mt Gambier for a unique experience. Once a cave formed through dissolution of the limestone, this sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber collapsed. Now, the topsoil down on the floor of the cave forms the perfect environment for its "sunken garden". A feature of the city has always been its beautiful gardens but the galleries and museums provide an interesting mix of art, history and culture. Visitors to Mt Gambier can experience the startling beauty of the nearby Tantanoola and Princess Margaret Rose Caves, the lush wine growing district of Coonawarra and the fascinating sinkholes, which attract scuba divers from all over Australia. Not far away, you can also visit the rugged coastline of Port MacDonnell and Cape Northumberland and the quiet serenity of the Glenelg River at Nelson where excellent fishing abounds. Or stay in the town where the locals are friendly and the feeling is country.
