Broken Hill
Broken Hill, known as 'The Silver City', is the largest centre in outback New South Wales, and has always been associated with silver, lead and zinc mining. Broken Hill is literally an oasis in the desert, a place of green parks and gardens. Often referred to as the accessible outback, Broken Hill is beyond the Darling River and said to be on the edge of the sundown – a feeling of such vastness awaits you at this historic town. The quintessential outback-Aussie town, Broken Hill has long been associated with a sort of mythical status, as though this was the real tough and desolate side of Australia. A spectacular landscape, Broken Hill is like a painting – beautiful and rugged – like a slice of the rest of Australia, a taste of the romance of the outback. Silverton, just outside Broken Hill, is the film capital of the Outback, renowned for images of red earth and camels in the main street. It was used as a location in the film Mad Max. Broken Hill itself is no stranger to being captured on film – perhaps most memorably in Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. Broken Hill is often viewed as a living museum with the underground experiences it offers and other adventures in above ground mines – the perfect destination for the weekend explorer. While in Broken Hill, you can also search for precious minerals ... who knows what you‘ll find! Broken Hill also has a vibrant art community with art galleries and artists’ studios. This is one of the nations most exciting art centres and has captured the imagination of visitors enabling them to truly see the region’s spectacular scenery through the eyes of its artists.
