Australia’s largest independent regional airline, Regional Express (Rex) has announced that it too will increase the fuel surcharge by $2.00 (including GST) per sector, effective from Saturday 27 August 2005.
The $2.00 increase matches the surcharge increase by Qantaslink. Rex Managing Director, Geoff Breust said, “Rex does not enjoy the special volume rates given to the larger airlines and the increases in fuel costs impose a much greater toll on us. As we are a relatively small player, Rex has no fuel hedging and the recent further fuel price increases have made it untenable for us to maintain the current rates.” “However, the Company is mindful of its social role that it plays in regional Australia and has therefore exempted the entry level fares from this surcharge, just as it had done so for most of the previous ones.” The total fuel surcharge for travel on Rex is now $22.00 including GST. Mr Breust said Rex’s fuel cost had more than doubled over the last twelve months.
Note: The surcharge applies to each flight/sector shown on a ticket or itinerary and effective on tickets issued on or after 27 August 2005.
