Regional Express (Rex), Australia’s largest independent regional airline, today announced the flight of the one millionth passenger on Rex’s network this financial year.
Making the announcement, Rex Managing Director Geoff Breust said passing the million milestone marked a significant achievement for Rex and reflects the great support the airline has received since it commenced operations just under three years ago.
“This is an important moment in the history of Rex and we thank all our customers and supporters. We budgeted to achieve this level and are even more pleased we have reached the mark with more than a week to go.”
Champagne is flowing on all Rex flights today and three lucky travellers have been selected as special One Millionth Customers in presentations in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
Rex is the amalgamation of two long established regional airlines, Hazelton and Kendell which went into Administration following the collapse of the Ansett Group in 2001. They were subsequently acquired by Australiawide Airlines Limited and have traded under Regional Express or more affectionately, “Rex”.
“Rex commenced services in August 2002 and in the eleven months of that first Financial Year carried only 665,000 passengers. To reach one million passengers in just our third year of operation is a tribute to the efforts of our staff, management and board,” Mr Breust said.
“Rex is firmly committed to serving regional communities and has consistently increased capacity and frequency across our network as demand for our flights has risen. Passenger carriage on many of our routes now far exceed historic levels prior to the Ansett collapse.”
“Our achievement today is clearly the result of the great support we have received from our customers. The whole Rex Team thanks them for their support and stands ready to work towards an even greater target for next Financial Year.
Rex staff will celebrate with their own champagne toasts later in the day.
Rex conducts over 1000 flights weekly to 28 regional destinations from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Rex operates a total of 29 aircraft, has a special corporate lounge facility at Sydney Airport Terminal T2 and its own Rex Flyer Program.
