Regional Express (Rex) today announced that it has been awarded two licensed routes by the Queensland State Government following a thorough tender evaluation process. The “Northern 1” route services the communities of Winton and Longreach while the “Northern 2” route services the communities of Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek and Mount Isa. Both routes are based out of Townsville.
Rex will commence the new routes on 01 February 2010, subject to regulatory approval.
Commenting on the awarding of the two routes Rex General Manager Network Strategy and Sales, Mr Warrick Lodge said “Outback Queensland is the heartland of Australian aviation with a long and distinguished history and it deserves a safe, reliable and high quality airline service. Rex is honoured to be selected by the Queensland State Government to provide this service.”
“Rex understands the importance of an affordable and reliable air service to the social and economic fabric of remote and rural Queensland and we make a promise to the State Government and the local communities that we will strive to surpass the quality levels imposed in the tender.”
“In 2009 we have established and steadily expanded our Townsville base and it now has 3 Saab 340 B-plus aircraft stationed there. The awarding of the Northern 1 & 2 routes will see a 4th Saab aircraft deployed. In addition to the 17 ex-MacAir staff we already employ, we are also committed to keeping as many of the staff and agents currently involved in these Northern routes as we can.” Mr Lodge added.
Regional Express (Rex) is Australia’s largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of more than 40 Saab 340 aircraft on some 1,300 weekly flights to 29 destinations throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Queensland.
