Regional Express (Rex) today celebrated the inaugural flight between Townsville and Mackay in North Queensland.
In a ceremony held in both Townsville and Mackay, guests and VIPs including the city councillors, members of Townsville Enterprise Limited, Townsville Chamber of Commerce and Mackay Chamber of Commerce, all witnessed the inaugural service.
Gracing the ceremonies as the respective Guest-of-Honours were the Mayor of Townsville, Cr Les Tyrell and the Mayor of Mackay, Cr Colin Meng, both of whom have strongly supported and welcomed the new service.
Rex’s commencement of services between Townsville and Mackay has been well received with support and encouragement from the local Councils and the wider business community.
Commenting on the new service Jim Davis, Rex Managing Director, said “It is very gratifying to see Rex taking to the skies of Northern Queensland and bringing the benefits of lower fares and increased flight frequency to the people of Townsville and Mackay. Our competitors reaction in dropping its fares by around 35% only too clearly illustrates that North Queensland has been missing out and we hope that Rex receives the local support it needs to sustain these benefits to the cities of Townsville and Mackay” The standard, fully inclusive one-way entry web fare starts from $99.00. Reservations can be made on the web via www.rex.com.au, by phoning 13 17 13 or through your local travel agent.
Townsville Airport Chief Operating Officer Kevin Gill was on hand to officially welcome the airline’s inaugural flight today saying it will provide a significant boost to the region.
“The North Queensland tourism industry will benefit greatly from this service, offering an additional 60,000 seats into the region annually.
“We welcome our newest airline partner to the region and look forward to working pro-actively together to ensure the success of the service,” Mr Gill said.
Regional Express (Rex) is Australia’s largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of 40 Saab 340 aircraft on some 1,300 weekly flights to 29 destinations throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Queensland.
