Pel-Air Aviation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Regional Express (Rex), has been awarded the Osborne Mine Fly In / Fly Out charter contract. Osborne Mine is a copper and gold mine located 720 km west of Townsville, and is owned by Barrick Gold Corporation (Barrick), the global leader in the gold industry.
Since the closure of Queensland regional airline Mac Air (Osborne’s previous operator) in February 2009, Pel-Air has provided Barrick with an interim service that has seen two SAAB 340B aircraft operate more than 270 flights to date. Pel-Air was awarded the contract to provide on-going longer term services following an extensive tender process by Barrick. Details of the contract are confidential.
Rex’s Managing Director Jim Davis stated that the selection of Pel-Air by Barrick is testimony to the professionalism and hard work of the 10 staff based in Townsville, all of whom are former Mac Air flight and ground crew.
Regional Express (Rex) is Australia’s largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of 40 Saab 340 aircraft on some 1,300 weekly flights to 24 destinations from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. The Rex Group comprises Regional Express, air freight and charter operator Pel-Air Aviation and Dubbo based regional airline Air Link, as well as the pilot academy Australian Airline Pilot Academy.
