Regional Express (Rex) has reacted to the sustained surge in oil prices by announcing that the airline will have to increase its fuel surcharge by $4.00 (including GST) per sector effective on all sales from 27 May 2008. This will see Rex’s fuel surcharge increase from $36.00 to $40.00 per sector.
Rex General Manager, Network Strategy and Sales, Mr Warrick Lodge said, “Rex is providing a critical and essential service to the bush, operating as the sole carrier on more than 30 routes. In order to ensure that these routes remain viable we, like everyone else, must respond to the record oil prices.
“However, even in the face of record fuel costs, through the tremendous efficiency gains we have achieved over the six years Rex has been operating, our average ticket prices inclusive of the fuel levy remain lower than they were when we started.”
The fuel surcharge increase is also applicable to Rex’s subsidiary airline, Air Link.
Rex is Australia’s largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of 38 Saab 340 aircraft on more than 1,200 flights weekly to 23 destinations from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. The Rex Group comprises Regional Express, air freight and charter operator Pel-Air Aviation and Dubbo based regional airline Air Link, as well as the pilot academy Australian Airline Pilot Academy.
