The continued rise in the price of fuel has forced Australia’s largest independent regional airline, Regional Express (Rex) to increase its fuel surcharge by $3.00 (including GST). Effective for all sales from 7 March 2008, Rex’s fuel surcharge will increase from $27.00 to $30.00 per sector.
Rex General Manager of Network Strategy and Sales, Mr Warrick Lodge said “Twelve months ago the fuel levy was $24.00 and the barrel price was USD 77.00. An interim adjustment of the fuel levy from $24.00 to $27.00 occurred on 1st November 2007 when the barrel price reached USD 90.00. Today the barrel price is in excess of USD 100.00 and it is necessary to again make an adjustment to the levy to recover partially the increase in fuel cost.”
“In spite of the fuel surcharge, Rex is proud of the fact that its average ticket price, inclusive of the fuel surcharge, is about 15% cheaper than it was five years ago when the surcharge did not exist. Excluding the fuel surcharge, Rex’s average ticket price today is more than 30 percent cheaper than it was five years ago,” Mr Lodge said.
The fuel surcharge increase is also applicable to Rex’s subsidiary airline, Air Link.
“In addition to the fuel levy increase there will also be some small fare adjustments across the top and middle range of fares on selected routes,” Mr Lodge said.
Rex is Australia’s largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of 37 Saab 340 aircraft on 1,300 flights weekly to 24 destinations from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
