Regional Express (Rex) and Maryborough City Council will co-host a special Rex Family Open Day this Saturday 29 September 2007 at Maryborough Airport to celebrate commencement of Rex’s services to Maryborough from 7 October 2007.
Rex’s Managing Director Geoff Breust said he was delighted that Rex is expanding its services to Queensland with Maryborough as the first regional destination.
“Next Saturday we’re flying in especially to show the Maryborough and regional community who we are and what we do while having a fun day at the airport at the same time. Rex Family Open Days are a feature of our annual community activities around our network and we are very pleased to join with the Maryborough City Council to kick off our new services with an Open Day this Saturday.
“We’re bringing a plane load of our staff in one of our Saab 340s from Sydney on Saturday morning. Festivities start at 10.00am and will run until 4.00pm and I am sure everyone will have a great time. There will be plenty of things for the kids and all the family.
“It’s going to be a great day. We have three Rex scenic flights with the Saab 340 over Maryborough, Hervey Bay and out to Fraser Island so local people can get a bird’s eye view of the coastline and where they live. These flights are always a big hit at our Open Days. On many occasions we have had first time flyers and they have had a wonderful time not only experiencing the exhilaration of flight but also seeing the area where they live. Seats at $40.00 each are available through our Call Centre on 13 17 13 with payment by credit card and I urge everyone to get in early as the seats book out quickly.
“The day is all about fun for families. Mary Poppins and Admiral Boom along with his canon, are dropping by to say hello, while belly dancers and other local live performances will keep us all entertained. The local Aero Club is cooking up a big barbecue and for the kids there’s a merry-go-round, jumping castle, face painting, free helium balloons and a colouring-in competition.
“There will also be Lucky Draws and Rex will have a stand for the sale of our corporate merchandise.
“Sponsorship support has been received from De Bortoli Wines, the Maryborough Aero Club and Hotel Grand Chancellor Brisbane.
“All funds received from the scenic flight ticket sales and other proceeds from the day will go to the Maryborough Branch of the Queensland Cancer Council. The Council is a community-based organisation dedicated to serving the Maryborough region in cancer control. Since it does not receive government assistance, its work is funded entirely from public support through donations. We are hoping for a big roll out to give the local Cancer Council branch a large donation” said Mr Breust.
Entry to the Open Day is free but a gold coin donation for the Cancer Council would be appreciated.
Commenting on the Open Day and the initiative shown by Rex, the Mayor of Maryborough City Council, Councillor Barb Hovard, said that “Community involvement is what makes Maryborough great. It is good to see that Rex is not only a first class aviation operator but also has a heart”. Councillor Hovard encouraged all locals to join in the fun of the Open Day and give the team from Rex Airlines a warm welcome to the Fraser Coast.
Mr Breust also thanked and congratulated everyone for their support and especially Mayor Barb Hovard and the Maryborough City Council for the major commitment to the Rex service and the Open Day.
“A regional air service is a partnership between the local community and the airline. In Maryborough we are starting off with a very strong partnership and that augurs well for the future of the service. We look ahead with great confidence,” Mr Breust said.
Rex is Australia’s largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of 34 Saab 340 aircraft on 1,300 flights weekly to 25 destinations from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
Rex services between Maryborough and Brisbane International Airport commence on Sunday 7 October 2007. The schedule comprises 36 flights per week with 34 seat Saab 340 regional turbo-prop aircraft. The aircraft is pressurised, air conditioned and fitted with a toilet. A light refreshment service is provided and a bar service is available on afternoon and evening flights. Fares start from $99.00 one way. Reservations can be made on the web via www.rex.com.au by telephoning 13 17 13 or through your local travel agent.
