Australia’s largest independent regional airline, Regional Express (Rex), has applauded the Federal Government’s decision to guarantee access and pricing for regional airlines using Sydney Airport.
“The Federal Government’s decision announced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, the Hon Mark Vaile, provides certainty for the future of regional air services in New South Wales,” Geoff Breust, Rex’s Managing Director said.
“It ensures access at reasonable prices capped by increases in the inflation rate means that Rex and the other airlines linking regional communities with Sydney, the rest of Australia and beyond are able to continue to provide these essential services and operate with confidence. We applaud Mr Vaile’s and the Government’s commitment to this vital requirement for regional communities.
“The continuation of price notification and price capping arrangements overseen by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) along with the ring fencing of aircraft movement slots for regional services at Sydney Airport plus the enroute charges rebate scheme all combine to provide a direct benefit to regional air services. Regional air services provide a vital link for the communities involved. Mr Vaile and the Government have adopted a practical and effective regime of assistance and guarantee of access for regional New South Wales communities to Sydney Airport,” Mr Breust said.
“It is also appropriate that State Governments and local government bodies who generally own and operate regional airports, fully recognise the huge importance regional air service access has for their communities and act to fulfil their commitments also. This importance includes not only a major catalyst for regional economic development but also access for primary social services including health and welfare.
“State Governments have a role to foster the development of air service access to regional communities in the same way they have obligations concerning road and rail access. Local government must ensure it provides the right level of infrastructure and cost regime to support the air service. Airport operators are major stakeholders and play a fundamental part in the success of their community’s air service,” Mr Breust said.
